As some of you may have noticed, at OwnKind, we’re increasingly working to empower the women in our local area. So a few months ago, we began searching for a local artist whose work we could commission to feature on an original t-shirt. Upon discovering Kalindy Williams, bound to “capturing suburban stories and dreamy babes”, I was Instantly allured by the powerful femininity and charm in her work. Collaboratively we opted for Kalindy’s ‘loves me not’ print to be centred across an ethically made oversized tee-shirt, as pictured.
Within these last few months, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the Melbourne based artist. Having already had her work featured by the likes of Vogue Italia, Superior mag, Dreamingless and Toksick, to name a few, Kalindy focuses on a vast variety of styles and techniques. From 35mm film, illustrations, collages, sewing videos and animations, Kalindy admits that she works with whatever she can get her hands on.
When I asked Kalindy about her personal style, she shared; “I draw inspiration from 70s, 80s and 90s movies, vintage fashion, cool locations, old picture books and by going on adventures to places I haven’t been before.” Speaking of the inspiration behind her ‘loves me not’ print, she shared; “I think we all played that game as a kid when we had a crush on someone. Pulling the petals off flowers hoping it would land on ‘loves me’.” When asked of her future endeavours, Kalindy so humbly shared; “I would love to be able to keep doing what I'm doing now! Hopefully, I'll be able to travel more and have a few more art shows in my back catalogue.”
When you’re looking for the essentials to carry you through from season to season, take a step forward and opt for OwnKind’s basics range. Made locally in Melbourne, we’ve got the threads that not only offer durability and relevance but that also, for a limited time, showcase the work of a local, accomplished, passionate artist. Below, Kalindy is pictured in our ‘Alana Midi Dress’, the perfect piece to take you from day to night.
